chasing spring

the eyes get bright and hungry.

new lush greens everywhere.  oh yes, it's spring.

back home for a few days, we had an atypicall wells spring party. granted, it was on the shadier side of the valley, where the full days' sun hasnt quite got to work yet. the snow is still piled high (it was still chest-high, two weeks ago). so the fire pit was dug out in the back yard, and we had a fantastic cariboo do in the cool spring air, nestled in a circle of snow. how's that to welcome her back?

i've been chasing her for weeks now. lucky me. i caught her first in victoria, way back in March. (so that's why victorians like it here so much). and then i flew to Ontario to see her there. the first flush of emerald peaking out on the edges of the 401. back home a little later, to witness the toughest sprigs already growing as soon as the snow fades out of their way.

and now, full circle, i'm back in victoria. and this is where she's hit her stride. blossoms on bushes so rich, the scent is enough to knock your socks off, the colour something unleashed and wild. mmm, i like it.

and i've noticed it's in the interactions of strangers on the streets. people walking lighter, slower, stealing longer glances at one another, just a little hungry for something after such a long cold winter. what is it about this time that brings the prospects of love so vividly out of the ether and into our skin?

blame the birds and the bees.

i've heard the bees are missing, absent from usual haunts, devoid in numbers. let's hope they are only resting a while, waiting for the best nectars that spring has to offer.

this one's for them.
